What is Mohs Surgery?
Mohs Surgery is the surgical removal of skin cancer from your skin, layer by layer. Mohs surgery is the only treatment method that allows the evaluation of skin cancer cells during the procedure, which results in the highest cure rate possible while removing the least amount of normal tissue.
Not all tumors grow as perfect spheres. There are several different modes of tumor growth that are best treated using the Mohs technique. What is visible on the surface of the skin may be only the tip of the tumor with a larger portion existing underneath the skin.
Different Types of Skin Cancer
- A Basal Cell skin cancer is a common type of skin cancer. If you have a growth that looks like this, you should have it evaluated to determine if it is in fact a Basal Cell skin cancer.
- A Squamous Cell skin cancer is another common type of skin cancer. If you have a growth that looks like this, you should have it evaluated to determine if it is in fact a Squamous Cell skin cancer.
- Melanoma is another type of skin cancer. If you have a lesion that looks like this, you should be evaluated to determine if it is in fact a melanoma.
The Mohs Surgery Process
- The Mohs surgeon assesses the skin cancer and determines how deep it is. The Mohs surgeon may refer to the growth under the skin as “roots.”
- The skin cancer surface is removed.
- The skin cancer under the surface of the skin is removed and viewed under a microscope to look for additional cancer cells.
- This step is repeated layer by layer until no cancer cells are found once viewed under a microscope.
- Mohs surgeons remove only tissue containing cancer, ensuring the patient keeps as much healthy tissue as possible.
Advantages of Using the Mohs Technique
- This form of treatment has the highest cure rate of any type of existing procedure—up to 99 percent.
- The maximal preservation of skin tissue is enhanced.
- This technique has the lowest functional and cosmetic morbidity of any procedure, meaning less scarring.
- It is cost effective compared to other surgical options.
- It is a one day, outpatient surgery using local anesthesia.

Midwest Medical Specialists submits bills to insurance companies as a courtesy to our patients. It may become necessary for you to contact your insurance or supply additional information to them for claims processing requirements or to expedite payment. Please remember that your policy is a contract between you and your insurance company. You have the final responsibility for payment of your bill.
Lisa Orrick will be taking some well-deserved time off from April 29th through July 31st. Should you have any questions or concerns during that time, please do not hesitate to contact the office to speak with one of our clinical team members. As always, we will be available if you need to make an appointment with one of our other providers or if you have any other issues that need to be taken care of. She will return at the beginning of August.

Termination of Ambetter and Wellcare/Allwell Insurance Plans effective 6/1/2023
Effective 6/1/2023, we will no longer be participating with the Ambetter and Wellcare/AllWell insurance networks. Patients seen by Midwest Medical Specialists within the last year with these plans will receive a detailed letter shortly via postal mail. Welcome our new ENT Physician Assistant - Leila Miller, PA-C!
We are excited to announce that Leila Miller, PA-C is joining Midwest Medical Specialists on July 26, 2021. Leila will be working with our ENT physicians. Leila has been working as an otolaryngolgist Physician Assistant for the past 10 years and brings a wealth of knowledge to our patients and our team. She also has 3 years of cosmetic and medical dermatology experience. This unique skill set offers her the ability to take a comprehensive approach to the aesthetic care of her patients. Leila will be seeing patients at the Merriam location for all of your ENT needs. We are extremely excited to welcome her to our team!

Merriam Med Spa Now Open!

Updated Coronovirus Policies 3-17-2020
In order to protect you, our staff and the community, please note that our office policies have changed to address the most current recommendations in dealing with the coronavirus.
- If you have a fever, cough or feel sick, please cancel your appointment and notify your primary care physician.
- If possible, please do not bring any guests to your appointment. All guests should remain in a car in the parking lot when possible.
- If you have recently traveled internationally or to a domestic high-risk area, we ask that you reschedule your appointment.
- Staff will be closely monitored and will not be allowed to work if they experience any symptoms.
- We will attempt to limit the number of people that you encounter during your visit. All surfaces will be sanitized. We will be washing our hands as well as wearing protective equipment as needed.

Welcome Our New Providers!
Midwest Medical Specialists is excited to announce the addition of two new providers to our practice.
Joining our Audiology Department is Dr. Katie Palmietto. Dr. Palmietto will be seeing patients for a variety of hearing related needs including hearing testing, VNG, hearing aid exams, sales and repairs. Dr. Palmietto is currently scheduling patients at our Merriam location.
Joining our Dermatology Deparmtent as the newest Physician Assistant, is Nicholas Maxwell, PA-C. Nicholas will be seeing patients for a variety of dermatological needs including rashes, acne, skin checks and moles. Nicholas will be scheduling patients at our two Northland locations, Liberty and Creekwood.
